Project description: 

Total project value: 32.5 mio EUR

The project components include:

  • Preparation of orthophoto plans
  • 423 wells of which 235 positives
  • Rehabilitation and extension of 20 former potable water systems of a mixed type: solar, thermal, etc.
  • Creation of 50 new potable water networks with mixed power source (thermal and solar). Each network comprises a well of a debit >5m³/h, one service building including offices, chlorination, photovoltaic, generator, etc.), of a water reservoir, of a distribution network and water fountain
  • Acting as a pilot project, 50 prepaid water fountains
  • Drainage measures: preparation of drainage masterplans (PSA), construction of latrines (SANPLAT slabs)
  • Accompanying measures:
  1. update of the socio-economic and cultural development plans of the local towns (PDSEC)
  2. institutional support
  3. IEC campaigns
  4. organisational development

Objectives: 

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the rural and semi-urban population, including health benefits, poverty reduction and gender equity through the provision of sustainable public water supply and sanitation services. The total investment is estimated at 25 million Euro. The project purpose is the sustainable improvement of water supply and sanitation services for the population 70 rural and semi-urban centres in the 2nd and 5th region of Mali through the realisation of 40 to 50 water supply schemes, the construction of private and public latrines and the realisation of Information-Education-Communication campaigns.

Furthermore, the project intends to improve managerial and administrative capacities of the communities and technical services operating the schemes as well as the monitoring of ground water resources through the implementation of an efficient monitoring system.
