Project background:

The Lusaka Sanitation Program (LSP) was instituted to provide adequate sanitation facilities to the urban population of Lusaka, with four funding Agencies cooperating to provide the necessary funds. The objectives of LSP are to increase access to sustainable sanitation services to Lusaka’s residents, especially the urban poor and to strengthen LWSC’s capacity to manage sanitation services. The program has a total budget of EUR 240 million.

Service description:
  • Desk study and planning of field investigations. Undertake field investigations, including topographical surveys and geotechnical investigations.
  • Pipeline route walkthrough to identify the optimal alignment for the new line and the interactions between the proposed sewer, existing sewers and other services along the pipeline route.
  • Hydraulic modelling of the trunk sewer pipeline.
  • Technical and structural design of manholes.
  • Preparation of preliminary and final detailed designs, technical specifications and detailed BoQ.
  • Preparation of final design report.
  • Preparation of Construction Drawings and technical assistance during construction works.
Objectives:

Sinohydro Co Ltd currently undertakes construction woks under LSP (CP1: sewer networks, pumping stations and trunk sewer pipeline) with a contract value of USD 33 million. As part of CP1, the upstream and downstream sections of Lusakas’ Western Interceptor sewer were upgraded (CSU2 and CSU1, trunk mains), whilst the intermediate section was initially omitted from the project. However, hydraulic models prepared as part of the overall program concluded, that the intermediate section was significantly undersized and would not accommodate flows expected within the design horizon.

After commencement of the main construction program, Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company (LWSC) decided that the gap between CSU1 and CSU2 trunk sewer pipeline should be constructed as part of LSP and contracted Sinohydro to undertake final design and implementation of CSU3 (2,310m of OD1200HDPE trunk sewer pipeline and associated man-holes). Subsequently, the Contractor appointed GOPA Infra to provide the necessary consulting engineering services.
