Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company Ltd (MWSC) is the water supply and sanitation service provider in partso the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, serving the mining towns of Chingola, Chililabombwe and Mufulira. The MWSC received a loan from the European Investment Bank and AFD as part of the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project for the “Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Water and Sewerage Treatment Facilities” in the urban centres, serviced by MWSC.
Under this project various project components are designed and implemented covering the following scope:
- Water treatment plant design and build;
- Operations services for the Chingola Kafue water treatment plant;
- Bulk water pipelines (approx.25 km of DI 450–1000mm);
- Design and build;
- Sewer pond rehabilitation design and build.
The design and build component is undertaken based on FIDIC Yellow Book Contract Conditions and will involve works at MWSC’s water treatment plants (WTP) in the three towns namely: Chililabombwe, Chingola and Mufulira.
Some treatment plants will require minor works such as replacement of electrical and mechanical equipment whereas others require extensive rehabilitation/ refurbishment of electrical and mechanical and, in some cases, structural elements of the treatment plants. The anticipated treatment plant capacities to be achieved by the project through rehabilitation and extensions are for Chililabombwe: Chililabombwe WTP: 57 Ml/d, Kamenza WTP: 14 Ml/d and Konkola WTP: 3.5 Ml/d (in total 74.5 Ml/d); for Chingola: Chingola Kafue WTP: 60 Ml/d; Mufulira: Kafue WTP: 14 Ml/d, MCM WTP: 17 Ml/d and Chibolya WTP: 26 Ml/d (in total 57 Ml/d).
The Kafue WTP at Chingola, presently operating at 40MLD requires refurbishment works at the existing facilities as well as an additional 20MLD minimum extension works.
