Project description: 

UNICEF Zambia is supporting the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS) in collaboration with the provincial and district authorities to improve water supply services in the provinces of Zambia. Part of this programme is the drilling and rehabilitation of boreholes, including the equipping of the same with handpumps or submersible mechanised pumps.

Service description: 

Scope of the services

  • Assessment of boreholes to be drilled and rehabilitated and confirmation of sites in accordance with GRZ and UNICEF guidelines
  • Supervision of drilling of 123 new boreholes (Northern Province)
  • Supervision of 16 boreholes to be rehabilitated (Northern Province)
  • Assess existing boreholes for the 14 water schemes
  • Design, procurement and supervision of 14 water schemes (Luapula, Northern, Muchinga, Central and Southern Provinces)


Services

Phase 1 - Comprehensive technical assessment

  • Site assessment in the 4 provinces, to confirm the new and existing borehole sites and the need for the boreholes in accordance with GRZ and UNICEF guidelines, i.e. distance to clean water, Number of beneficiaries, is the borehole in use or can it still be rehabilitated.
  • Assessment of existing boreholes for confirmation of yield (4 No. Southern, 2 No. Muchinga, 6 No. Northern and 2 No. Luapula Province)


Phase 2 - Technical support to procurement

Technical support is done for the procurement of the 14 water schemes.

Phase 3 - Drilling supervision and quality assurance

  • Quality assurance of boreholes already done by another drilling company, different than the one to supervise
  • Supervision of contractor for sites already assessed and partially worked on
  • Ensure that the contractor(s) will drill and rehabilitate the boreholes according to the drawings/ BoQs and tender documents.
  • Provide engineering services for undertaking comprehensive technical, environmental and social assessments, to elaborate Environmental, Social, Health and Safety management plans (ESHS) and to supervise and monitor the contractor(s) regarding compliance with ESHS and guidelines.
  • Supervise the drilling contractors on a day-to day basis and ensure that they follow all the requirements
  • Communication with the Client and ensure a timely submission of all the documents
  • Supervise the installation of the 14 water schemes, including network, elevated tank and solar panels.
