Given the increasing challenges posed by climate change, the need for sustainable development is becoming more important. Lowering overall energy and resource consumption plays a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, there has been a rise in awareness, leading to the adoption of new policies, laws, regulations, including financial mechanisms focusing on the circular economy (CE), climate change adaptation, and mitigation measures. Integrated solid waste management (ISWM) is presenting opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially in the broader context of the CE.
In the context of rapidly growing urban areas, the increasing generation of diversified waste and recyclable materials presents a challenge in many countries around the world, especially to traditional linear SWM, which follow a "take-make-use-dispose" model. Additionally, inappropriate collection and disposal of solid waste lead to serious environmental problems and are not aligned with global goals such as climate neutrality, reducing plastic pollution, and a just transition to a CE. Competent authorities at all levels often find it difficult to upgrade and maintain their SWM systems according to national laws and international best practices due to budgetary constraints and lack of specialised expertise.
GOPA Infra’s core services in climate change, CE and ISWM respond to several international donor programmes and initiatives, such as the Green Deal of the European Union (EU), the Marine Litter Prevention of GIZ or the Clean Ocean Initiative of KfW Development Bank, EIB and AFD. All of these programmes take into account climate action, sustainable industry and the abatement of pollution. We provide services for improved energy efficiency, (re-) use of resources, management of diverse waste streams and key product value chains to promote circularity and unlock economic opportunities in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. We take into account sustainable, comprehensive expertise and cost-effective solutions for stakeholders at local, regional, and national levels. All our services take into consideration safeguards, gender-specific, conflict-specific, and context-sensitive measures to ensure holistic solutions.
We are active members of the German RETech Partnership and PREVENT Waste Alliance to enable a constant exchange of knowledge and ensure that we are always up to date with the latest developments.
